How to Freeze Your Credit at All Three Bureaus

A breach notice lands in your inbox, and buried in the second paragraph is the line that matters: your name, birth date and Social Security number may have been exposed. Passwords can be changed in a minute.

A breach notice lands in your inbox, and buried in the second paragraph is the line that matters: your name, birth date and Social Security number may have been exposed. Passwords can be changed in a minute. That number cannot, and it is all a stranger needs to open a credit card in your name.

The single strongest step you can take is to freeze your credit at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. It is free in the United States, it takes about 30 minutes for all three, and it does not affect your credit score. This guide covers exactly how to do it, what to keep safe afterwards, and how to lift a freeze when you need a loan.

What a Credit Freeze Actually Blocks

A freeze stops a bureau from releasing your credit report to new lenders. Since almost every lender checks a report before approving a card, car loan or phone contract, a frozen file makes most new-account fraud fail at the first step.

Think of it as a deadbolt on a door that you rarely use. Most adults apply for new credit only once or twice a year, so leaving the file frozen the rest of the time costs nothing in daily life. The few minutes of hassle when you do apply are a small price compared with the months it can take to unwind a fraudulent account, dispute the hard inquiries and get collections agencies to stop calling.

It does not block everything. Your existing cards keep working, your current lenders can still see your file, and you can still check your own report. It also does not stop someone from using a card number they already stole. For that, you need card alerts and the steps in our guide on what to do right after a data breach notice.

Freeze, Lock or Fraud Alert

The bureaus offer three products that sound alike. Here is how they differ in practice.

OptionCostStrengthBest for
Credit freezeFree by federal lawStrongest, legally backedAlmost everyone
Credit lockOften bundled in paid plansSimilar effect, governed by a contractPeople who want an app toggle
Fraud alertFree, lasts one yearLenders should verify identity, not must refuseA quick stopgap

A freeze is the one to choose. Locks are marketed as more convenient, but freezes can now be lifted online in minutes anyway, so the paid convenience rarely earns its fee.

How to Freeze Your Credit Step by Step

Set aside half an hour and do all three bureaus in one sitting. Freezing only one leaves the other two open, and lenders choose which bureau to check.

  1. Gather your details: full legal name, Social Security number, date of birth and your addresses for the past two years.
  2. Open the Equifax freeze page by typing the address yourself rather than clicking a link from an email. Create an account and request a security freeze.
  3. Answer the identity questions. These are usually about past addresses, loan amounts or old employers. Take your time, because three wrong answers can push you to a mail request.
  4. Repeat at Experian, which may issue a PIN, and at TransUnion, which uses an online account.
  5. Save every confirmation as a PDF or screenshot, with the date.

Online requests take effect within one business day by law, and in practice usually within minutes. Requests by phone are processed on the same timeline, while mailed requests take up to three business days after receipt.

Protect the Logins That Control Your Freeze

Here is the weak spot most guides skip. Your freeze is only as safe as the bureau account that can lift it. If someone guesses that password, they can thaw your file and apply for credit the same afternoon.

  • Use a unique password of at least 16 characters for each bureau account, stored in a password manager.
  • Turn on two-step verification wherever the bureau offers it, preferably with an authenticator app rather than SMS.
  • Store any PIN alongside the account entry in your password manager, not in a notes app.
  • Use an email address that has its own strong protection, since it receives the reset links.

Lifting a Freeze When You Apply for Credit

When you need a mortgage, a car loan or a new phone plan, ask the lender which bureau they will check. Many will tell you. Then log in and choose a temporary lift for a date range, such as seven days, rather than removing the freeze permanently.

Online and phone lifts must be processed within one hour. If the lender does not know which bureau they use, lift all three for the same short window. When the dates end, the freeze switches back on by itself, so there is nothing to remember.

A quick tip from readers who have done this during a car purchase: lift the freeze the evening before you visit the dealership, not while you are sitting at the finance desk. Bureau websites occasionally ask extra identity questions or time out, and that is far less stressful at home with your password manager open than on a phone in a showroom.

Freezes Worth Adding Beyond the Big Three

The three main bureaus cover most fraud, but a few others are worth ten extra minutes if your data has been exposed.

Banking and utility files

ChexSystems tracks checking accounts, and a freeze there makes it harder to open a bank account in your name. The National Consumer Telecom and Utilities Exchange, known as NCTUE, covers phone and utility accounts. Innovis is a smaller fourth credit bureau that some lenders still use.

Children and dependants

Parents can create and freeze a file for a child under 16. Children are attractive targets precisely because nobody checks their credit for years. You will need a birth certificate and the child's Social Security card, and requests usually go by mail.

Freezing credit pairs well with shrinking how much of your personal data is easy to find. Our walkthrough on removing your info from people search sites cuts down the address history that scammers use to pass identity checks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does freezing your credit hurt your score?

No, a credit freeze has no effect on your credit score. Your accounts, payment history and utilisation are untouched, and you can still check your own report for free.

How long does a credit freeze last?

A credit freeze lasts until you remove it. There is no expiry date and no renewal fee, unlike a standard fraud alert, which ends after one year.

Can I still use my credit cards with a freeze?

Yes, your existing credit cards and loans work normally during a freeze. It only stops new lenders from pulling your report to open fresh accounts.

Thirty Minutes for Years of Protection

Freeze all three bureaus in one sitting, lock down the accounts that control those freezes, and use short temporary lifts when you apply for credit. It is free, it is reversible, and it closes the door that most identity thieves try first. Put a reminder in your calendar to check all three reports once a year, and you will spot anything odd long before it becomes a problem.
